About dragand

What is dragand?

dragand is a Mac app that puts a small shelf on the right edge of your screen. Drag a file onto it to hold a copy for 24 hours, or keep the file there until you need it. It also has an optional clipboard history that keeps the last 7 days.

What is the difference between Hold and Keep?

Hold keeps a copy for 24 hours and leaves your original where it is. Keep puts the file itself on the shelf, out of its folder, until you drag it out or put it back. Both can be undone.

What happens when the 24 hours are up?

The held copy is cleared, and your original is never touched. If the original was deleted in the meantime, the item says so and offers Keep, so you can save the copy before it clears. Nothing clears in the first hour after your Mac wakes up.

Does dragand upload my files or clipboard?

No. Your files and clipboard never leave your Mac. The only time dragand goes online is to check your purchase or trial, through RevenueCat, using an anonymous ID. There are no accounts and no analytics or ads.

Is clipboard history on by default?

No. It is off until you turn it on. When it is on, it keeps the last 7 days, stores them encrypted on your Mac, and never saves items password managers mark as private or anything from apps you exclude.

Which Macs does dragand work on?

Any Mac running macOS 14 Sonoma or later, with Apple silicon or an Intel processor.

How much does it cost?

dragand is free to download, with a free 3-day trial you start yourself. Unlocking it is a one-time purchase of $9.99, yours for good on every Mac with your Apple Account. There is no subscription. Without the trial or the unlock, dragand still works: drops, the shelf's row actions and Clipboard's copy keys wait 3 seconds first, at most once a minute. Your files are always yours.

How is dragand different from other shelf apps?

Most shelf apps keep everything until you clean up. dragand is temporary unless you keep something: held copies clear themselves, so the shelf never turns into another junk drawer.

Using dragand

How do I open the shelf?

Rest the pointer against the right edge of your screen and click Files when dragand comes in, or press ⌃⌥⌘S.

How do I make a held file stay?

Hover it on the shelf and click Keep. It goes to Kept, with no timer.

Can I change how long Hold lasts?

Yes, in Settings › Files.

Where are my files?

In your shelf folder, ~/Shelf by default. Right-click an item and choose Show in Finder.

Troubleshooting

I can't see dragand on my screen.

It only comes in when you need it: while you drag a file, or when you rest the pointer against the right edge of your screen. It doesn't come in over another app's full-screen window, such as a video or a game. Settings › General sets which edge, which display and where on the edge. If your Dock is on the right, resting the pointer there won't bring it in: choose the left edge in Settings › General › Edge.

Keep held a copy instead of moving the file.

dragand can only move files out of folders you allow. Allow the folder when asked, or in Settings › Files.

Clipboard history isn't saving anything.

Check it's turned on in Settings › Clipboard and not paused. If macOS has turned off clipboard access for dragand, the Clipboard tab shows a button to open Privacy & Security.

An iCloud file says "Waiting for iCloud".

It's cloud-only and you're offline. It finishes by itself when you're back online.

Purchase and trial

How does the free trial work?

dragand is free to download. The 3-day trial is a free App Store item you start yourself with Start Free Trial and confirm in Apple's purchase window, for $0. Nothing is ever charged automatically and there's nothing to cancel. Near the end, Settings shows "Trial ends tomorrow", then "Trial ends today". When it ends, dragand tells you once, and you can unlock it for $9.99, paid once.

Where is the free trial?

In the last step of dragand's first run, in Settings › General, or right-click dragand at the edge and choose Unlock dragand…, then Start Free Trial.

What happens without the trial or the unlock?

dragand still works fully. Three things wait 3 seconds first, at most once a minute: dropping files on dragand, the Files panel's row actions, and Clipboard's copy keys. Dragging files out, Put Back, Reveal, Quick Look, Undo and Settings never wait.

Why does dragand need the internet?

Only to check your trial and purchase, through RevenueCat, with an anonymous ID. Your files and clipboard never leave your Mac. See the privacy policy.

How do I restore my purchase?

Open dragand › Settings › General › Restore Purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account. The unlock covers every Mac on that account. You can also unlock or restore from the right-click menu (Unlock dragand…).

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Uninstalling

How do I remove dragand?

To delete your clipboard history too, first turn it off in Settings › Clipboard. Then quit dragand from its menu (right-click dragand at the edge) and drag it from Applications to the Trash. Your shelf folder stays, because it contains your files; check Kept before deleting it.
